Soundproofing a bedroom door doesn’t have to be expensive. In fact, you can do it yourself over the weekend if you are not busy like I did when I was trying to soundproof my own bedroom door.

How to Soundproof Apartment or Any Bedroom Door

There are different ways to soundproof your door depending on the type of door that you have. Below are some great ways to soundproof your bedroom door.

1. Use a Door Sweep

The biggest gap in every door is mostly the gap between the door and the floor. Materials like weatherstripping tape or a door gasket can’t deal with it. You need something thicker and mobile to soundproof the door bottom, such that it is not a big obstruction in the doorway.

That is where a door sweep comes in handy.  amazing results happen once you are able to take care of this gap. It made a big difference in mine. Unless your door itself is too hollow that the sound is literally entering the room through the door itself.

You may ask, what are door sweeps?. They are products that are made of sound-absorbing materials that when you use them to seal a gap in your door, block out the noise coming through that side whenever the door is closed.

If you are doing it yourself it might take a couple of hours to do, if you are not a professional. That is because it will involve drilling into the door the screws of your door sweep fasteners.

It isn’t that easy. However, once you install the door sweep, you get other benefits like blocking out dust and insects from entering your room.

In times, like winter, they also prevent cold from entering the room and if you also use air conditioners, they prevent the cold from escaping the room, thereby conserving your electricity.

I use the Commercial Grade Door Sweep when I was soundproofing my bedroom door.

2. Seal All Gaps and Cracks

This is probably one of the easiest ways to block noise through the door. It is also affordable.  Gaps and cracks in a door can cause a lot of unwanted sounds to enter your room or you could also be disturbing your neighbors with noise from your room.

These don’t take much time and energy to install. Your only work will be identifying where the gaps and cracks on the door that needs sealing.

One easy way of seeing the gaps and cracks in your door is to turn the lights off in the room and close the windows with the curtains closed as well.

Now let someone stand on the other side and light a torch through the closed door. This will cause the light the other side to pass through the cracks and gaps. Now use a marker to identify them for sealing.

You can easily seal them up with an Insulating Sealent which I recommend you use. Because I used it and it worked for me. If you are concern about your door looking ugly after using it, you can paint the door back to the color you like. It is paintable.

If the gaps are small less than 1 inch, then you can use the Gap and Crack Sealent.

3. Use a Weatherstripping Tape on the Door

Do you know that weatherstripping tape your parents used for the garage door?. This can also be a good sound damping material.

Weatherstripping tape is usually a  tape made from sound-absorbing materials such as fiberglass. Usually, they come with adhesive that allows you to easily set it up.

This type of tape’s primary use is to keep away dust and dirt, however, when sound travel through any medium, especially a solid one, its intensity decreases.

Soundproof blankets for doors work by absorbing the sound energy. So you won’t hear much of it. They are made of fiberglass materials.

The only downside of soundproof blankets for doors is they don’t usually look visually appealing. If you don’t want to opt for these because of aesthetic appeal, then you can use a soundproof curtain for the door instead.

5. Use Soundproof Curtains for Your Door

Who said soundproof curtains are only for windows. Soundproof curtains’ primary purpose is to help dampen the sound waves that pass through the door.

If you don’t want to use the soundproof blankets I recommended above because they are not all that visually appealing, then I will recommend you use Soundproof curtains.

With Soundproof curtains, you can choose the colors that match your room decor, unlike the soundproof blankets.

I have one of the heavy soundproof curtains on my door and it does well by keeping the noise out of the room by absorbing it and also blocks lights from coming.

To install soundproof curtains, you will need to install curtain rods above the door frame first. This may take some time but is not really difficult. Once the rods are in place, simply hang the curtains like how you did when you were installing some on your windows.

6. Use Door Gaskets

Door Gaskets works in a similar way to weatherstripping tapes. So you can choose door gaskets to seal instead of weatherstripping tapes

These are best for sealing the header and jambs of the door. They block sound waves out, light and moisture from entering the room. Here is a good Door Gasket Seal you might like.

7. Place a Rug

Placing a rug close to the door is a way of absorbing the sound or echoes. But you must, however, be aware that they don’t work as effective as the other sound absorbing materials mentioned above.

They can work well in conjunction with other bedroom door soundproofing methods.

If you use a heavy rug, it will reduce the noise though and probably add some visual appeal to the room. They are also cost-effective when it comes to cutting your costs down in soundproofing your room.

If you are looking for a rug to use for sound dampening, I suggest you try out These Soundproofing Rugs Here on Amazon. They are extra-thick rugs made of polypropylene fibers that make them strong and durable.

You get to choose from a variety of colors and designs as well.

The upside of using a rug is, you don’t need any form of installation. You simply buy your rug and place it where it is needed to absorb the sound.

8. Use Sound Absorbing Foam Panels

Acoustic Foam panels are another great and effective way to block out sound from entering the room through the door. These are very popular soundproofing materials that are affordable.

They come in different colors and sizes. You can get them in the form of wooden or foam. These may be a better option for you if other options seem too expensive for you like the blanket.

However, if you use them in conjunction with the door sweep, the gaps and cracks sealants, and soundproof curtains, you can easily eliminate or reduce the noise drastically.

They work by increasing the air resistance which also, in turn, reduces the amplitude of the sound waves.

Just like the soundproof fiberglass blanket, all you have to do is hang the foam panels on your doors and you are good to go.

How to Soundproof a Hollow Door

9.Replace Your Hollow  Door With  a Solid Door

Most house owners in their effort to cut costs on the building usually use hollow doors. Even though they are lighter, they are, however, great amplifiers of noise.

I know replacing a hollow door with a solid one is expensive work. But sometimes, that option is the best. Because the solid door will work more effective in blocking out the noise.

Solid core doors are thicker and rather than amplifying sound, they will dampen any sounds that pass through them.

If you are ready to spend a bit of a fortune on your soundproofing project, buying a new solid door is a great option for you.

These doors come equipped with acoustic door material that is used mostly in the music & radio industry to eliminate outside noise 100%.

When it comes to installing a door, unless you are already handy or technical, I will recommend you get a professional to do it for you. In order not to spoil your wall or the door frames.

If you see this to be a bit too much, then you should just add extra mass to the door like drywall

Drywalls reduce the amount of sound that passes through them. Attaching drywall to your existing hollow door will significantly reduce the sound that goes through it.

How to Soundproof a Door Cheap

If the intensity of the sound is not that much. You can soundproof a door cheap with some of the items I mentioned above.

The benefits of soundproofing a bedroom door far outweigh the cost. However, not all of us have enough money to put into a house project like this.

If you don’t want to spend a lot of money, then I recommend you identify the gaps and cracks first and seal them.

If you are looking to dampen the noise just to decent levels, then I suggest using one of the cheaper methods such as using weatherstripping adhesive tapes.

Then, you can get a door sweep instead as well. After that, if the intensity of the sound waves reduce you may leave it like that otherwise add a soundproof curtain to it.
