soundproof paint

Soundproof paint does work in reducing faint noise and if you want to tune out certain low levels of noise. But it is not going to soundproof loud noise. Instead, this sound deadening paint works best in conjunction with other soundproofing techniques.

What is Soundproof Paint and What is it Made Of?

Soundproofing paint power is due to the components used in making it. There are thermacels present in acoustical paints.

The soft pigment that is stored inside the cells so that when sound hits the surface, the sound energy is absorbed. What this means is that less sound energy travels through the wall.

The paint is formulated with hollow ceramic microphones, sound-absorbing fillers, and resins. So, this gives it the sound-absorbing ability. Soundproof paint is mostly heavy-bodied, water-based flat latex paint. Great for surfaces like walls, ceilings, plasters, primes metals, and woods.

Here are some benefits of using soundproofing paint.

  • Its is  great for sound insulation and dampening
  • Acoustic paint is environmentally friendly
  • Very fast drying, so you can allow a lot of layers fast
  • Easy to clean with soap and water because it is a water-based product
  • Dampens ringing and thinning noise in metal structures

The hollow ceramic microphones, sound-absorbing fillers, and resins present in the soundproof paints help prevent the sound from traveling through the surface that is painted and reduce echoes by absorbing it.

Sound deadening paint is believed to be able to reduce mid-frequency sounds up to about 30%. This makes it effective for low noise.

Thermacel based paint also improves your room’s heat insulation and the other use is for redesigning the room.

Does Soundproof Paint Really Work?

As I already established at the beginning of this post that painting your wall using soundproof paint alone as a  method of soundproofing any surface will only be effective for low to mild noise.

It is not going to suddenly prevent those heavy footsteps or that loud music from getting into your space or leaving it.

So the answer to your question; does soundproof paint really work is yes. Soundproofing paint does work to a certain extend. but using it as the only means of soundproofing a possible highway noise from entering your home is questionable.

Here are some scenarios where soundproof paint does work just to give you an idea. If your baby is a light sleeper who is frequently awoken by low levels of noise, if you are a light sleeper and get awoken by frequent low noise, or you don’t want your neighbors to be disturbed by your late-night conversations.

In these cases, soundproof acoustic paint does work in muffling the sounds.

But this does not apply to loud television volumes and talking. You will need to reduce the volume down a bit to stop annoying your neighbors.

So as you can see, sound deadening paint is effective in your soundproofing project to sound extend but it is not effective in soundproofing sounds like a dog barking, loud tv, heavy footsteps, loud music, and other loud sounds that can be termed as noise.

If you want to rip the true benefits of acoustic paint, you need to combine it with other soundproofing methods.

Acoustical Paint Application Tips

When it comes to applying acoustic paint, you will need a brush or a roller and all the usual painting equipment. However, the application is slightly different.

Sound deadening paint is thicker and because of that, it doesn’t easily spread well to give much coverage. Hence will require you to buy enough if you plan on soundproofing a large area. 1 gallon of the paint will cover roughly 100sqft.

Even though it is fast drying, but it does take longer than the standard oil paint. Therefore, when you apply it, give it enough time to dry like about 20 hours before adding an extra layer. It is also recommended that you should avoid applying it when the temperature is low as it will take much longer to dry if needs be then heat the room up to speed up the drying process.

Thicker the paint the more effective the soundproofing. Therefore, don’t over dilute it. Apply at least three layers for better soundproofing.

When applying the paint ensure that you completely cover the entire surface of the wall, don’t leave any gaps, or do half of it as this will make it ineffective, instead ensure that every inch of the entire wall is fully covered.

To apply it, use a roller or the pressure spraying system to apply it. This is because of the density of the paint, brush, and roller will give you smaller coverage than using the pressure sprayer.

A pressure sprayer only gets slowed down when the content in the container is low; in this case the paint. You can spray a large area in minutes not hours.

What is the Cost of Soundproof Paint?

Soundproof paint cost can cost between $2.25 to 3.25 per square foot. Your total cost will now boil down to the number of gallons you will need to use to soundproof your space. If the space you intend to soundproof is large, then you will spend a couple of hundred dollars to do so.

  • Use a Weatherstripping tape and Curtains

You can use the weatherstripping tape on the door and window frame and jump to seal the gaps and cracks on them. This will block out any airborne noise from coming into the room.

It’s one of the cheapest soundproofing products in the market. It also blocks insects, bugs and draft from coming into the room and as well safe you energy bills.

Soundproof curtains are a great way to block sound coming from outside the window and even the door. These curtains are thicker and denser and have the ability to reduce noise to a certain level.

  • Green Glue Soundproof Compound

This acoustic compound is great for sealing bigger holes, cracks, and gaps. Its a compound that is able to convert sound energy into heat energy. This sound dampening compound has so many uses.

If the wall or ceiling has any cracks or gaps, you can use this green glue to fill those cracks.

The other way you can use this compound is to sandwich it between your existing drywall and the extra drywall you wish to add to the wall or ceiling. When it is in between the two drywall, it acts as a decoupler between the two walls.

This way, when noise from either wall is passing through, it will absorb it and convert it to heat before it gets to the other drywall. The soundproofing compound also adds extra mass to the wall.

This is a very good way to reduce loud noise especially impact noise. There are many soundproofing compounds but green glue is one of the popular ones.
